Lead, Develop and Make Accessible the Cultural Heritage of Performing Arts
The Performing Arts Museum, part of the Swedish National Heritage Board, is seeking a collection manager with strong leadership and solid subject expertise in music, theater, or dance. The role provides overall responsibility for a national cultural heritage and the opportunity to influence how collections are used, developed, and made accessible for the future.
The Performing Arts Museum is a state museum focusing on music, theater, dance, and puppet theater. The collections encompass over 50,000 items – ranging from costumes, models, and props to one of the country's largest collections of musical instruments. The breadth and long history make the museum a unique knowledge environment for managing, developing, and making accessible the cultural heritage of Swedish performing arts.
The Swedish National Heritage Board is an authority for cultural heritage in the fields of music, theater, and dance. The Board operates under the Ministry of Culture and includes the Music and Theater Library, the Swedish Folk Music Archive, the Performing Arts Museum, the Electronic Music Studio, and the record label Caprice.
About the Position
As the collection manager, you will lead and develop the Collection Unit, which currently consists of four employees, with responsibility for personnel, budget, and operational development. You will work systematically on the development of digitization and accessibility to streamline and strengthen object management and collection work. You have overall responsibility for ensuring that the collections are managed according to laws, guidelines, and good museum practice. The work takes place both at the museum on Sibyllegatan and in the object storage in Tumba.
The role also involves a strong operational focus. You will work closely with your colleagues in the daily work of handling objects, digitization, and knowledge dissemination, where your subject expertise will have a significant role. Physical tasks are a natural part of the job.
As part of the museum's management, you are expected to contribute to the overall development of the organization, with commitment to both the Performing Arts Museum's and the authority's mission.
Qualifications
For this role, we require that you have:
- Documented managerial experience and good leadership skills.
- A university degree in a relevant field for the museum, such as theater studies, dance studies, or musicology.
- Documented specialist competence in Swedish theater, dance, or music developed through many years of relevant work experience.
- Knowledge of museum working methods, collection management, and relevant legislation.
- Good ability to express yourself verbally and in writing in Swedish and English.
Preferred qualifications for the position include a doctoral degree or research experience in theater, dance, or music, in-depth subject knowledge or work experience specifically in theater or dance, as well as experience in audience-adapted communication in some form.
Personal Attributes
As a person, you are communicative, attentive, and perceived as unpretentious. You are confident in yourself and your competence as both a leader and subject expert. You are collaborative, proactive, and interested in learning new things.
You have an interest in both people and objects and thrive in a role that combines operational and strategic work. You contribute to a safe and productive work environment and are accustomed to working analytically and with quality awareness. It is natural for you to work in accordance with the state value framework.
Employment
The employment is a permanent position. The authority applies a 6-month probationary period. Location: Stockholm and Tumba. Start date according to agreement.
We offer flexible working hours and a sustainable balance between work and leisure. As a state employee, you are covered by generous vacation terms, parental leave supplements, and a secure pension agreement. You also have access to a generous wellness allowance and wellness time.
We welcome your application by February 15, 2026. We ask you to ensure that your application clearly describes how your experiences and qualifications meet the requirements stated in the advertisement.
